Nobody’s Bizness
Pioneer Pub welcomes tired & weary rebels

by Linda Phillips

Nobody’s Bizness Band rocks downtown Oregon City; this city, that is known to be the first in the Northwest Territories, goes retro. It’s back to its roots and rebuilding the downtown area, bringing the hustle and bustle of early days of the states first capitol and the end of the Oregon Trail. The city is alive with nightlife and promises you the spirit of true Oregonians here at the Pioneer Pub, located at 720 Main St. (formerly Dr. John’s). On the banks of the Willamette River and site of the first hydraulic power plant west of the Mississippi, you can find a place that is electric with music. A place that welcomes the tired, the weary and the rebels who want to rock and renew, this little city comes alive again and welcomes your homecoming to the Pioneer Pub.

Stake your claim to the Pioneer burger and a cold 20 oz. beer while watching your favorite sporting event on big screen. Mosey on up to the loft and play pool, where the view of the dance floor is best. If you’re up for conversation, find a cozy seat at the nostalgic bar and listen in on the talk of the town. You can also enjoy a private place to concentrate on video poker, with large viewing windows right across from the bar for the ones who feel lucky.

Happy hour is between 3 and 7 p.m. so take advantage of the specials before a night of fun or wait until Saturday when they extend happy hour starting at 11 a.m. On Sunday, you can be happy every hour because the specials run all day including the covered wagon appetizers. Seriously folks, owners Ria and Justin Brower go out of their way to make you feel like the experience at the Pioneer Pub is one you will want to relive. This is awesome service with a smile with plenty of food and entertainment to keep you coming back. Look for live entertainment and other events on the official web site www.pioneerpuboc.com.

Nobody’s Bizness Band, who recently played here, has a song list based on blues, but offers variety with plenty of rock and roll. The members are versatile in all styles, with the featured vocalist Kelly Halter both powerful and soulful. Halter, a founding member of the five-year-old group, fronts the band effortlessly. Halter is a true professional with a spark and love for music that is contagious. This writer thinks that, as a native Oregonian, she adds extra sass to the singer’s spot and that any sun we have shines on her. Halter’s versions of Mercy and Grapevine are especially sure to please.

Guitarist Bob Demary brings the fun with big smiles and original leads that sound unique and energetic. All the members of the band sing vocals, but Demary prefers singing the rock numbers and does so very well. After 30 years of playing his guitar and being an entertainer, he releases the pure pleasure of the music to everyone in the audience. This “bizness” man is all business during the week and lets it rock on the gig.

Dan Banham, Jonathan Chase and Eric Star came into this group a little later but are a definite team. Younger, faster, stronger, leaner than some blues players, this group of guys is on fire for the cause. Each player has plenty to add, with the group or to show off for themselves and reels with enthusiasm. So many times this writer has found burn out amongst players, but not in this case. Banham plays the keyboard and thinks on his feet, always able to follow the lead and play to the crowd. Chase holds the rhythm just off the record to maintain a constant focus, while drummer Star backs the band like a loaded gun with power. Come see and be inspired.
