At KJ's
BlueJayz boast 4 decades of musical experience
The BlueJayz
To call the BlueJayz experienced players would be an understatement! With four decades of musical experience between them, these seasoned players combine for a solid R&B experience.
Front man, singer and keyboardist Joe Buche has played and performed since the tender age of 14. Buche counts Delbert McClinton as one of his major influences. Buche handles the majority of the vocals but the BlueJayz also feature Jay Bradshaw and "Julio" Salisbury adding to the vocal presence.
The band lineup includes: Jaime Eoff on drums/percussion; James Hynson on electric bass; Buche keys and vocals; Bradshaw, guitar and vocals and Salisbury on guitar and vocals. The BlueJayz style includes a nice mix of vintage R&B, with influences that run the spectrum from jazz and blues, to reggae and funk. Drawing on material from the '50s,'60s and '70s, they serve up a varied and entertaining show.
The night this writer was in the audience, The BlueJayz performed at a Southeast Portland favorite, KJ's, S.E. 20th & Division. Part of Portland's historical past, KJ's building started out as a meat processing facility. Now known for roasting their own meats and serving some of the best burgers in Southeast, KJ's provided relaxed surroundings for The BlueJayz performance. The evening's presentation featured a guest artist on harmonica, Dave Atkinson. The crowd enjoyed the number Mercy, Mercy, Mercy featuring Atkinson's harp skills. Atkinson recently completed tracks on local favorite Ellen Whyte's latest project.
A great time was had by all, and when this writer left, the crowd was still going strong. There's nothing like good friends, good sounds and good food and drink to make a fun night out.
The BlueJayz, like many Portland bands, have many incarnations. They include duo, trio, full band and, when required, the addition of horns and other instrumentation. These rhythm and blues aficionados play clubs, private parties and a wide variety of events and occasions.
