The Firkin & Frog
DJ/KJ fills room with fun & frivolity in Vancouver
There's a new approach to food and entertainment in Vancouver (USA) and it comes to us by way of Canada. Firkin and Frog, 2714 N.E. 111th Ave., is just about a year old and is a unique, comfortable place to meet family and friends for food and spirits.
This pub (and it is a pub, as opposed to just another restaurant), is casual yet elegant and one feels at home right away.

This establishment is part of a Canadian chain that names each pub "Firkin and.... (insert local tie-in word here)." So for the Northwest, Firkin and Frog is the moniker. (Firkin is a small, wooden cask or barrel, most often used in beer and ale brewing, like with the good folks at Portland's Bridgeport Brewing). Beyond the somewhat odd name, lies a warm, comfortable environment, with very good food at surprisingly low prices.
Firkin and Frog has eight wide screens for sports and free wi-fi for those who are more inclined to compute than watch the current game. There's a happy hour daily from 3 to 6 p.m., with $3 well drinks and other specials, including a new menu with terrific prices.
The real news here though, is Karaoke. From Wednesday through Saturday nights, KJ Scott Clegg is in command of the bar area and he fills the room with fun and frivolity as he offers folks a chance to strut their vocal abilities in front of whoever will listen. Clegg says, "There are no bad singers, just poor listeners."
Clegg says his main desire is for people to have fun; that everyone has a good time and feels respected during their performance. To the ears, he is successful in his attempt. This writer visited on two different nights; both times the room was packed, with people having a terrific time.
The performances of a couple people were enjoyable and Clegg even gets the employees involved. There are some very talented people here, to be sure!
A new Karaoke contest began April 9 with a $10 entry fee and offers cool prizes to the winners. It's worth your time and effort to get involved.
At the heart of things, Firkin and Frog is a pub, styled in the tradition of a classic British pub. They feature an expansive menu, full bar (even Newcastle Brown Ale), very reasonable prices, evenings filled with fun and variety, thanks to Scott Clegg and Karaoke Fun Machine.
A great time will be had by all!
Clegg also appears on Tuesdays at the Cascade Bar & Grill, 15000 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd. in Vancouver, Wash. at 9 p.m.
