Notes On A Napkin
As I wrack my brain trying to figure out new ways to make financial ends meet, I'm putting out vibes of hope! It's so depressing to read & hear all about the job losses, the market slumps & poor sales; it would be nice if we could read some good news for a change. This recession has brought me closer to Our Lord Jesus Christ & I'm definitely happier & calmer for that. I'm also putting the word out for a much-needed marketing angel for PE&D. Let me know if there's anyone out there willing to work for a generous commission.
Now, on to the happy news:
PE staffers & friends KT & Geraldine joined me at The Pink Feather recently to hear famous Bob McGraw's one-man-band. We were not disappointed as Bob performed New York New York, In the Mood, Margaritaville & Don't Be Cruel, all in his own style. Read all about it in KT's article this issue.
Bassist Greg Earl met me at The Pink Feather for a tasty lunch after Mass last week. I had my usual broasted pork chops, while Greg chowed down on the famous broasted chicken. Greg and I invited each other to our respective churches to worship & hear the music; I have yet to go to Greg's church to hear him play. Stay tuned...
Friends Harry & PE writer Lauree Carlsen accompanied me recently to 1220 Main, downtown Vancouver, to hear PE writer & fine keyboardist/vocalist Keith Laurent. Harry & I created our own space for dancing to one of my favorites, Crazy! 1220 Main is a cozy corner-windowed nightspot, with subdued lighting, a fireplace & superior service. Owner Dawson Green, a performing artist himself, has established a neat spot to hear The Al Perez Trio, Kimberly Hall, Loretta Stites & more. Be sure to clip the coupon below for a free dessert!
One of our most interesting adventures recently was to see "Mark of Mystery," the professional illusionist who performs tableside at Jake's on Fridays. Lauree, Geraldine, Melody & Harry joined me for some delectable appetizers, including a seafood platter, clam chowder and carrot cake. Be sure to read Lauree's article this issue on the amazing Mark Dorsett.
KT, Geraldine and I joined friend Wally at Lydia's lately for a rompin' good time with Ron Ruedi & the Hurricanes. Musician extraordinaire Billy Hagen sat in on drums this night, as well as guitar (his forte), bass and vocals. KT & I got our exercise on the dance floor this night...you really can't help but dance to Ron's band. Meanwhile, keep praying for Ron to be healed of his brain cancer.
Last but certainly not least, the same bunch of us traveled out to the Alberta Street Public House for Misty Mamas CD release party & stayed for the entire incredible show! See cover & article for the whole story.
Late -breaking note: I just couldn’t end this column without mentioning the incredible Johnny & the Distractions concert at the Aladdin last night. With all the original members present, these guys cooked. Jon Koonce & his band of former glory have only improved with age. From Octane Twilight and Rock On, to Desire and the new Let Me Come Home, Jon & the veteran musicians rocked like it was yesterday. Watch for a new album, Jon says. It makes me wonder if this really is "The Last Dance," as it was dubbed. Only time will tell, we'll see...
'Til next time, pray for world peace.............................Bonnie Carter, ed.
