Music Millennium celebrates
40 years of success this month

By Staff

This March, Music Millennium celebrates 40 years of success. The store, located at 3158 E. Burnside, opened in 1969 and has survived well through many ups and downs in Portland's socio-economic history.

In 1969, most record stores could credit their financial health to sales of the "most-wanted, most-played-on-the-radio" mainstream kinds of records. In some cases, the long-playing records were still available in monaural format, with stereo or quadraphonic formats not yet critically useful to the general public.

Music Millennium thrived on the previously undocumented consumer base available for records of artists such as Frank Zappa, The Fugs and the Holy Modal Rounders.

On March 15, the Music Millennium birthdate, the store played its original opening song, All Too Much, by the Beatles with cake and punch served. The entire month of March features special celebratory events.

In-store live performances still to come are Mark Hanson on March 21 and Azeda Booth on March 27.
