Powerful songs of praise pervade atmosphere

by Senior Pastor Floyd Gregg

A lot of people do not realize that Elvis Presley had his beginning performing and singing as a teenager in a church.

Many of the greatest musicians of historic human times began, continued and finished by performing the world's greatest musical compositions in churches, cathedrals and before audiences of religious worshippers. Think of George Frideric Handel's world-renown musical instrumental composition The Messiah, of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who wrote 18 instrumental musical Masses, of Joseph Haydn's powerful religious musical oratorio entitled The Creation and of Ludwig von Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. These all composed their great musical works for religious audiences or in worship to God. Considering the huge Book of Psalms, which is Songs of Praise in the Bible, it should not be a surprise to see this later in human history.

As the service begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings at 4105 S.E. Harrison Street, Milwaukie, (the location of the Evangelical Christian Family Church), the powerful beat and tone of music pervades the atmosphere. Jimmy Thompson, a professional and well-known local musician, kicks up the beat, sometimes rock and sometimes country. Singer-vocalists, swaying behind microphones to the left of the auditorium stage, bring their voices into the air. Worshipful colorful patterns of silk flags are waved by some. They are in the sweep of that music and it is praise to God!

Also performing musical compositions here, at the new location of the Evangelical Christian Family Church, is accomplished acoustic guitarist and golden vocalist Ron Judd. Both Thompson and Judd are also independent contractors; they perform musical gigs for establishments, restaurants, weddings, concerts and special events. They are available to hire for additional musical gigs. For an establishment looking for great professional musicians or another special event, Thompson may be contacted at: 503-318-2785 and Judd may be contacted at: ronjudd75@yahoo.com. For wedding-marriage ceremonies, contact the church directly via the church website: www.ministrychurch.org.

Also at Evangelical Christian Family Church, dinner is served downstairs in the church building, free of charge every Sunday. There is a published menu of hot foods each Sunday. All are welcome! The church also uses dramatic acting talents/gifts so if drama/acting be your talent/gift, come on Sunday! If you write poems, you will have an opportunity to read that poem from the microphone.

If you draw or paint with Biblical or Christian themes, you are provided an opportunity to exhibit drawings or paintings here on Sunday mornings. If you are looking for an exciting, interesting place to be, in addition to great music. Be here on Sunday mornings at the 9:30 a.m. Bible Class. There are very interesting intellectual Bible discussions, lots of commenting, lots of participation. Come and talk!

Considering the sweeping power of music in the world’s history, the deepest thoughts of the heart of humanity have often been expressed in musical composition. It was in the instrumentals and chanting in the medieval cathedrals of Western Europe for the great religious audiences who met there, the a cappella songs on the wind-swept sand shores of the New World, sung by the Pilgrims after their long and arduous ocean voyage. It was in the rhythmic songs sung by slaves of the plantations in the Antebellum South, laboring in the cotton fields under blistering sun, singing forward and looking toward their one-day freedom. It is in the riveting rhythmic tempo of band instruments and vocalists singing on Sunday mornings at Evangelical Christian Family Church! All are welcome! Come and enjoy – this is a place to be! This is a place to belong!
