Notes on a Napkin
from the Editor
A couple of tragic events occupied most of my time & attention this past month; first of all, sadly, my good friend Dean Geary passed away (his kidney cancer spread to his only other kidney). I'll be going to his memorial Friday at Willamette National Cemetery & I'm feeling quite heartbroken. It's so hard to believe he's gone. The other catastrophe is my 16-year-old nephew William suffered a heart attack & underwent open-heart surgery; the good news is that his heart is healing well, but he suffered brain damage as a result of the attack. He is currently at Providence Child Center & only time will tell how soon he will recover. He needs extensive care, some of which is not covered by insurance, so I will probably be organizing a fundraiser for Will in the near future. If there's any volunteers interested in helping, let me know. And please pray for Will's healing. A fund is set up at any US Bank for William Carter's donation.
It seems rather trivial to relate stories about my escapades, but I did take a short vacation to Las Vegas, planned months ago. My girlfriend (from grade school) Mary & I celebrated our milestone birthdays together. (I'll let you guess which one!)
The highlight of the trip was The Beatles Love Cirque Du Soleil, a fabulous musical odyssey down memory lane, telling the years-long story of fab four through their music & acrobatic dance. It's hard to describe in words how phenomenal this production, showing at The Mirage, really is. Our seats (w/speakers) were perfect; we were able to see most of what was going on, although you had to be looking up, straight ahead & side-to-side, all at the same time! Anyway, you would have to see the performance several times to take in everything. Some favorite songs included Get Back, Eleanor Rigby, Something, Blackbird, Strawberry Fields, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club, Within You, Without You, Lucy in the Sky, Octopus' Garden, Lady Madonna, Here Comes the Sun, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Hey Jude & the finale All You Need is Love.
The night before, we enjoyed Cher at Caesar's Palace, another fantastic show. Although she didn't dance as much as in the past (after all, she is in her '60s!), her hit-filled appearance was entertaining & her costumes dazzled the crowd. Anyway, Mary & I certainly enjoyed ourselves, gabbing & laughing 'til our sides ached.
Sonny Hess turned 50 this month, so KT, Lauree & I made an appearance at the Chelsea Ballroom for the big party. Many local luminaries turned out, and/or performed, including Leah Hinchliff, Lisa Mann, Dave D., Megan James, Ellen Whyte, Rae Gordon, Dan Hess, Kevin LaBaron, Mary Curtis, Sonny's partner Jamie and a number of others. Many happy returns Sonny!
For all her fans information, blond bombshell Taska Barlow (Henn) & her entourage are making a stop in the area at the Beaver Creek Saloon, Sunday, Oct 6. See ya there!
Til next time, pray for world peace.......................Bonnie Carter, ed.
