Copper Rooster's New Owner Features Has Karaoke

The Copper Rooster, 5827 E. Burnside, is a small hard liquor bar resembling a funky house in Mayberry ala Andy, Barney and Thelma Lou. "It used to be Rogers", says Karla Duvall, bartender extraordinaire. She worked for Rogers for six years.

This writer has never been treated so well in an interview. Duvall’s eyes glow humanity as she tells how the new owner Charmane Thompson bought it two years ago.

This "little house on the prairie" now has Texas Hold ‘Em, pool tables, dart machines, trivia and a new bar. Pool is free on Sundays and Mondays. Once a month, Karaoke is served from behind the bar by a mystery lady, plus they add bingo on Saturdays. If that is not enough, the Rooster is putting together a golf tournament just for the bar loungers. This is a good way bar owners in the area can meet at each others’ places one Saturday a month, and compete at golf.

This sacred southeast chateau has a new face. "It is different from the old Rogers", Duvall says. The food has changed too. It is now basic hamburgers and bar food with a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. That is when they drop prices, as well as celebrate the customer of the day.

This is a much younger crowd compared to the older crowd who hung out when it was Rogers. The Copper Rooster boasts real regular beer from four royal taps that radiate brass bliss for the thirsty neighbors who show up where everyone knows your name. This is a real family place of which Aunt Bea would definitely approve.

The Rooster no longer has the musician's jam night but they are thinking of bringing it back in the fall.

The second anniversary party with Thompson at the helm was May 31. It touted food all day and night, all Mexican food. This was a real celebration worthy of a lofty song on the Karaoke stage. Hopefully someone sang Our Town or whistled the theme of the Andy Griffith Show. Let the Copper Rooster crow!
