Benson Hotel's Palm Court Lounge
Timeless classic exudes classy essence

By Dan Golden

The new Palm Court Lobby Restaurant and Bar, located in one of Portland's most elegant hotels, The Benson, is truly a timeless classic.

This comfortable bistro exudes the essence of class without pretension. It was recently remodeled as part of the hotel's million dollar lobby renovation. The Palm Court is certainly a great destination point for a night on the town, offering exquisite cuisine, top notch service and live entertainment five nights a week.

The decor alone is stunning without overwhelming. Rich surroundings of Russian Circassian walnut woodwork, accented by Australian crystal chandeliers, Italian Panozzo marble and Axminster carpets, immediately establish a relaxed atmosphere that can be easily appreciated. Newly installed leaded glass inserts complete the dramatic appearance. Private banquette seating affords a cozy arrangement for those seeking a romantic or business-like setting.

The well-trained serving staff also adds to the overall experience. A standout amongst this excellent group is head bartender Jonah Kobiyashi, a veteran of over 10 years at The Benson. His charming and engaging personality immediately makes you feel like a "regular" at The Palm, even upon your first visit. His incredible knowledge of various libations, plus his mixing ability and presentation, make any beverage a wise choice.

Kobiyashi's original concoctions, such as the lauded "Black Widow," will bring you back again to see what new delicious innovation has been added to the already expansive cocktail menu, recognized by the Oregon Distillers Showcase. The Palm also has received the respected Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its wide ranging cellar collection.

The food options at The Palm Court are also spectacular. Open for lunch, dinner and latenight dining, the restaurant offers not only an extensive and interesting appetizer selection, but the full menu offered at the hotel's adjacent AAA rated 4-Diamond London Grill eatery. Executive Chef Serge Selbe presides over the incredible selections on the bill-of-fare, with choices ranging from pan-seared Muscovy Chicken Breast to Flash-cured Wild Salmon, Kobe Beef, the "triple threat" Benson Sliders and the enchanting Chantarelle Cappuccino. Everything is prepared fresh-to-order and presented with elegance and style. Prices are in line with the exquisite preparation and surroundings without overbearing.

The Palm Court is also known as Portland's longest-running jazz venue, with a 50-year history of live music presentation. Tuesday through Saturday nights, various local standouts are showcased. A recent midweek visit featured Bill Beach and The Brazil Beat, an extremely versatile and entertaining trio. Wednesday nights, the Neal Mason Trio with renowned pianist George Mitchell holds forth and Thursdays through Saturdays are taken over by the Lee Wuthenow Quartet.

The Palm Court will also be a participating venue in this year's upcoming Portland Jazz Festival.

Stop in at the historic Benson Hotel for a visit to one of downtown Portland's most elegant and appreciated full-service eateries. You will join a visitor's club that includes every U.S. President since Woodrow Wilson, Elvis Presley, Joan Baez, David Bowie, Jamie Foxx and other celebrities and dignitaries with discriminating taste.
