For most, Monday isn't a night likely to lure people out of their cozy homes to see live music. For jazz lovers, however, Mondays at The Sylvan Steakhouse more closely resemble a weekend night, filled to the brim with enthusiastic patrons. The rainy Monday this writer ventured out, it was tough to find a seat! Booths and tables overflowed with animated jazz fans enjoying great food, good company and excellent music!
The architect of this successful jam is none other than Portland's own Ron Steen. With a resumé that spans 40-plus years playing drums with some of the biggest names in the business, Steen is truly one of Portland's musical treasures. A bandleader from the tender age of 19, Steen runs a seamless show featuring the best players in town; at the same time including and developing intermediate players through the association. His ability to make everyone feel comfortable and welcome creates an upbeat, positive vibe that's infectious. He truly is a musical ambassador for his art form.
Last Monday was a stellar one to be sure! It was the first Monday of the month, so the featured guest artist was none other than another of Portland's jazz stars Tom Grant. Grant and Steen’s musical association began in the late ‘60s, playing with Jazz Hall of Fame member Jim Pepper. In addition to Grant, rounding out the house trio was venerable pro bassist Dave Captein.
After a few amazing numbers with the trio, Captein lent his bass to one of Steen's protégés, Kate Davis. She began playing a weekly gig at Wilf's, while still a high school student. Now attending the Manhattan School of Music, Davis joined the boys for several numbers, singing and playing bass with equal skill. Davis is truly an amazing talent. Following Davis was vocalist Heather Kaiser, joined by Wade Kirtley on sax and Jonathan McQueen on trumpet. Players came from as far away as Seattle to share the stage with these incredible artists, each one as good as the last.
To add to the evening's appeal was the great food that accompanied it. This writer thoroughly enjoyed her Mushroom Swiss Burger and salad, to be sure! The Sylvan Steakhouse menu offers diners a great selection of tasty choices. With six to eight starters, steaks, burgers, salads, homemade soups and a Reuben to die for, you won't have any trouble finding something yummy to please your taste buds.
With a great wine selection, beers and full bar, you're sure to have a great evening out, when you make the time to enjoy Ron Steen's jam! Located so close to the Portland Zoo, at 5515 S.W. Canyon Ct., it's also the perfect spot to grab a great lunch before an afternoon with the animals, or drinks after a summer concert. You won't be disappointed!
In addition to Steen's Monday Jam, The Sylvan Steakhouse features live music most weekends, so you can hear a variety of quality artists from different genres. See you there! (See ad and Music on Tap this issue for more details.)
