RAE GORDON
AND THE REBOUNDERS
By Lauree Carlson
Ray and the Rebounders recently excited the crowd at the Daily Planet,
a new live music venue at S.E. 114th and Powell. There were lots of
dancers as well as diners enjoying the show.
Rae Gordon's spectacular vocals were backed by a powerful band of talented
musicians. She brought her years of experience of many outside and local
influences showing her unusual individuality of voice interpretation.
The Daily Planet has incredible food with full course meals, most everything
fresh and homemade and the prices are reasonable. Invite your friends
for great food, ample parking and atmosphere. The employees are accommodating
and supportive to make your evening a memorable one. The music stage
is set up well for either close viewing or farther away with a great
sound system. A fireside room gives you a cozy feeling and the fish
tank is awesome!
Rae and the Rebounders auditioned and got started in August of this
year. Gordon credits her backbone sound to her band members. Her prerequisite
was a sense of humor, as she states, "Humor is most important for
on stage chemistry. I mean these guys have to put up with me."
Gordon's own humor is constant and refreshing on and off stage. The
name Rebounders seemed to fit as Gordon just came out of a relationship.
The band members consist of five seasoned musicians. Jon Zaer is the
bass player. He never put his bass down, even as a mechanical engineer.
Gordon had a hard time finding him and feels fortunate to have him with
the band.
Randy Morrison plays lead guitar and is also a solid lead singer. He
brings his solo experience and has sacrificed gigs to play and sing
with the Rebounders.
Steve Sudborough plays drums and brings with him many years and experiences.
He played with many local bands.
Gordon completes the group as the dynamic powerhouse lead female vocalist.
The crowd was clearly focused on her as she belted out the blues, yet
crooned you back with her unusual vocal talent. Originally from Southern
Calif., Gordon was acclimated to Molalla's country town. Gordon says,
"I ran away at 24 and didn't bring the L.A. attitude cuz it wouldn't
fit in the car." While in L.A., she sang at piano bars getting
her feet wet. That was seven years ago. Upon moving, she worked at Lee's
Kitchen in Tualatin. She still visits there often and gets her country
fix.
Gordon credits many bands for letting her sit in with them around the
Portland area. Local artists Margo Tufo, The Aaron Black band, LynnAnn
Hyde and many blues jams inspired Gordon to keep going and not give
up. She says, "I kept singing the same two songs over and over
and they all put up with me." Over time, she immersed herself in
the blues scene performing at the Candlelight Room, Hopper's and blues
jams around town. Local and outside influences such as Bonnie Raitt,
Celine Dion and Bette Midler helped to bring about a unique style all
her own. She surprises you when she hits that melodic note when you
least expect it which sends chills.
Be sure to watch for Rae and the Rebounders performing at Stein Haus
on Nov. 16 and also at the Outer City Blues Festival on Nov 23, at The
Longhorn and Spot 79. See schedule in Positively Entertainment's
Bandstand. Her web site is
