MOCK CREST TAVERN

By Rae Gordon

A quaint, comfortable spot where you immediately feel at home is the Mock Crest Tavern on North Lombard. It was originally established in 1947 and was the site of an old popular meat market.

Mock Crest is a small hangout with a very big heart and the bright neon sign outside to back it up. To say that it is down-to-earth would be an understatement for this wonderful spot. From the stained glass porthole on the front door to the HIS and HERS labeled restroom doors, this is a definite delight. In this homey bar with its cozy interior wood siding, don't be surprised to find patrons elbow to elbow with each other at a single table.

Although small in stature, Mock Crest is very big on attracting locally infamous musical blues acts such as Terry Robb. as well as the fun and sassy duo of Kinzel and Hyde, among others; a Thursday open mike is hosted by Donna Jose. In addition to the top-notch live entertainment, they feature Karaoke on Sundays.

When live music isn't an option, a disk player full of 200 CDs is available. Mock Crest also has pool and lottery products to go along with the impressive lineup of music.

The menu runs the gamut from breakfast that includes chicken fried steak, omelets, a mondo breakfast burrito served Saturday and Sunday mornings to the tried and true burgers and sandwiches served anytime. The chicken tenders are particularly large and tasty and good for the money. Great after hour menu with all your late night snack favorites round out the rest of the choices. There is also a private back deck for daily dining especially enjoyable at the peak of summer.

The Mock Crest Tavern is comfortable like an old pair of shoes you look forward to slipping on after a long day's work. There is no better place in this part of town to do just that. The space is cozy and the regulars are friendly, so if you take the time to check it out, be prepared to make a few new friends. As the front of the menu attests, the Mock Crest Tavern is "Where Friends Meet."

Call or swing by Mock Crest Tavern for their impressive schedule of live entertainment that changes every month. (See Music on Tap.)
