Leslie Marie presents all-pro live/digital fusion stage show

By KT

Another Round, the clubhouse/restaurant at the Gresham Golf Course, is the venue for a very friendly jam session on Thursday nights, 8-11 p.m.

Leslie Marie Lusk, singer, keyboardist, drummer, KJ, and hubby, singer, drummer, KJ Doug Varnon, put on a fabulous show: Leslie’s Double-Take Productions. They utilize the digital backing tracks from their large Karaoke song collection and include Leslie Marie on keyboards and vocals, digital drumset played live, saxophone and guitar. You have to be an excellent technical musician to play along with pre-recorded sound tracks and actually stay “on time.” Varnon and guest Joe have no problem with this task.

Lusk accompanies singers with vocal and keyboard parts. This writer has experienced some of the worst and best jam sessions and Karaoke shows; the presentation by this couple is amazing. The PA system sounds good. It’s all geared toward supporting the singers and these KJs are ever-vigilant in adjusting their technology and accompaniment to the needs of the vocalist. Talk about sharp!

Lusk has a significant history as a drummer. She was in demand because she’s really good. She’s a genuine artist, making the performances run smoothly and successfully.

On a recent Thursday evening at Another Round, Lusk and Varnon were supported by Richard Faulkner on tenor sax and Jack Sharpe on guitar. Various singers enjoyed the stage, including this writer. This set-up, run by experienced professionals, helps singers to give their best. You can hear the tune, what key it’s in (adjustable) and yourself, so you can just lean into your song and not worry about high-frequency hash, feedback or gutless nasty-sounding microphones set up wrong. It’s a fun session for everyone involved.

On Thursdays, Another Round closes at 11 p.m., but if you go early you can have a tasty and affordable dinner. Specials are offered in addition to the regular menu. This place sports a full-service bar, protected smokers’ area and a huge, well-lit parking lot. Since the jam session starts and ends relatively early, you can enjoy a real treat of food, music and socialization and still be able to get up on time the next morning! Start your weekend early!

If Thursday nights are not your best opportunity, Leslie’s Double-Take also performs on Fridays at Paola’s Corner. On alternating Saturdays, Lusk plays piano at the River View Restaurant in Troutdale (the former space for Hagar’s).

Singers and non-singers alike can enjoy Leslie’s Double-Take productions. This writer anticipates a return, both as a singer and playing baritone sax live. It’s one of the “funnest” sessions in town.
