Keith Robert Laurent

By Mark Warye

Musician Keith Robert Laurent performs every Wednesday at The Top Shelf in Vancouver, Wash. The establishment is “top shelf” all the way with martinis their house specialty. This writer tried an espresso martini that was excellent.

Laurent has a long background in the music field, starting when he was a young child, where he was required to spend two years learning to play piano. That started a lifelong enjoyable passion for music. He has become a well-versed musician able to play many different instruments, starting with the bugle when he was young, then graduating to the drums in the Drum & Bugle Corps at the age of ten. When in grammar school, Laurent changed his sights again and learned to play the trombone. While in high school, he also learned to play the guitar and started his own seven-piece band.

Throughout college, Laurent continued to perform while studying music theory and composition. From the time he was young until today, he seems to be a man who enjoys what he does and chases after his dream. He is able to somehow balance all the different styles of music and playing that he is required to do in the many different venues he plays. He is a member of Closed Captioned, where he plays keyboard, as well as The Rich Horner Trio, where he gets to play the drums, his first love. Last but not least is his gig on piano and vocals at the Top Shelf on Wednesdays.

If you would like to hear piano music that covers 30-plus years, today’s newest. As well as some originals done by Laurent, take a drive up to the Top Shelf sitting on the corner of 600 Main Street in Vancouver, Wash., and prepare yourself for some wonderful and relaxing sounds of Keith Laurent.

While you are there, have a martini. They probably will have one to fit your taste, as there are too many to fit on their menu, as this writer found with the espresso martini tried. If you’re not into martinis, there are many other selections. You will also find the staff is friendly and courteous, tending to your every need. For a bar that just got started in 2005, they have earned themselves note as a place to go in Vancouver.
