New Music Venue:
The Haven Entertains All Ages with Music & Comedy

By Joy Sen

In the words of singer/songwriter Sally Sieh, “Music has a way of reaching, touching and moving us in ways that mere words cannot.”

Sieh (pronounced “C”) and her group performed Saturday, Feb. 17, at The Haven, 9727 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Sieh has a style that is an eclectic mix of jazz, pop, contemporary, Christian and country. Her rich vocals, creative songwriting and superb instrumentation add up to a fun, thoughtful, quirky, wistful and teasing sound.

Sieh is a native of Oregon who started entertaining over 20 years ago. She has always played her own music. In Sieh's own words, ”I cover it all.” To prove that, she has released a CD of original songs titled Sunny Summer Afternoon, available at
www.cdbaby.com /cd/sallysieh.

The band consists of Victor Sharpe on saxes; Craig Bidondo on piano; Ted Swenson on basses and Rob Lewis on drumset.

Go to www.sallysieh.com for a list of places where Sieh and her band will be playing.

The Haven is a great new eastside venue featuring live jazz/swing and comedy on Saturday evenings from 8:30-11 p.m. in a family-friendly, non-alcoholic, non-smoking atmosphere. Sponsored by Eastside Foursquare Church and The Trinity Project Church, it is adjacent to the Sacred Grounds Coffee shop at the Quality Inn/Rodeway Inn complex (formerly The Flamingo). Dancing is encouraged and beverages, sandwiches and desserts are available from the coffee shop. A minimum $5 donation is requested. Parking is available at the Trimet Park & Ride, just west of the Eastside Foursquare Church.

The Eastside Foursquare Church, led by Pastor Eric Bahme, is becoming quite famous in Portland for the unique vision of the Rodeway Inn project. As well as being a motel for the public, up to 24 homeless people live and work on the premises gaining job training and life refurbishing. There are church services, Sacred Grounds Coffee Shop, as well as The Haven nightclub. Students also get job experience at the different businesses. A few years ago, Pastor Bahme had a huge heavenly vision to help the community and it is now a wonderful working model.

The newly opened Haven is managed by Waldo Wollrabe, who thought it would be nice to have a nightclub where all the family could come and experience live jazz and swing music, as well as stand up comedy. Wollrabe’s wife Regina is the award-winning, Portland-area clown “Cha Cha,” and she has been instrumental in getting the laughs together. Wollrabe is a musician in his own right and is using his knowledge of area jazzers to book the music. Again, it’s another good working model, this time for a marriage. The house band that he has booked (at least three weekends a month) is the ever-entertaining Margie Hyas and crew.
