Daydream Road

By M. Sebenoler

Last summer Positively Entertainment profiled the historic Goble Tavern on Highway 30 between St. Helens and Rainier. At the time, Goble Warming I, a free music festival, was in its planning stages and happened on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Although a couple of the bands didn't make it, rousing performances by Kinzel and Hyde, Jones and Roadman, The Bloozbats (now the River Ratz) and The Blind Rootin' Hogs capped the night with a two-and-a-half-hour show that had everybody rockin' and looking forward to this summer's Goble Warming II.

Since then, many fine groups from as far away as California played the Goble Tavern and its patrons are the happy recipients of some great music. Though the small tavern, owned by Blind-Rootin' Hogs' rhythm guitarist Jerry Modin, has a very limited budget, it hasn't stopped the great talent from performing there. Groups that play steadily include the Blind Rootin' Hogs, Kinzel, and Hyde, The River Ratz, Lisa Miller and the Trailer Park Honeys and Daydream Road.

Daydream Road, consisting of guitarist Jimi Clewell and guitarist/electric bassist Cindy Swanson, are a tight wonderful act. They are backed by their own programmed musical tracks of drums, bass and more guitar, giving them a tight, full band sound. Both Clewell and Swanson are excellent vocalists and are very tight musically. Together since 1999, they cover a wide range of classic rock, country, blues and ballads, from Fleetwood Mac to Z.Z. Top.They have an incredibly large and diverse songlist, including originals. The duo has performed all over Portland, the Oregon and Washington coasts and works steadily.

Daydream Road has become a regular at the Goble Tavern. Everyone there, as well as most places they play, absolutely loves them. They harmonize beautifully and always sound like a much bigger group than they are, with no problem packing a dance floor. At the Goble Tavern, when you have a dozen or more people dancing, the old building literally rocks and rolls, according to River Ratz drummer Paul Jones.

Music legends old and new, from Hank Williams to Baby Gramps, have played at the Goble Tavern, and though small in size, the tavern has become a legend itself, especially along the Columbia River. Away from all the glitz of the big city, the Goble Tavern is a fresh breath of country air, unpretentious and very casual. Groups like Daydream Road love playing in the relaxed atmosphere Jerry and Sindee Modin have created in the Goble Tavern. Word has spread fast.

Daydream Road plays regularly at the Goble Tavern, as well as The Spot in Molalla, Tippy Canoe in Troutdale, Slim's in Portland, and The Place. See schedule for Daydream Road and the Goble Tavern this issue, and be looking for news on Goble Warming II this summer. It'll be another dandy!
