Tippy Canoe

by Brooks

Summer is on the way and one of the nicest, coolest drives in the Portland vicinity is the Crown Point Highway in Troutdale. The Sandy River keeps that area cooler than the rest of Portland. Along the Sandy River, there are many wonderful recreational opportunities including fishing, hiking, picnicking, swimming, rafting and sunbathing.

The Tippy Canoe Bar and Grill is located right next to the Sandy River in Troutdale on the scenic Crown Point Highway. Owner Vic Jones has reinvented his operation with a liberal injection of Portland’s blues and rock live music. Every weekend wonderful local bands perform. This Friday (June 24) Bad Motor Scooter plays, Saturday is Muddy Joe & the Blues Hounds and Sunday, catch Triple Creek. On the third Thursday of the month, Cee Cee James is on hand to offer her special blend of Roadhouse Blues.

The Tippy Canoe has a full kitchen and offers weekend breakfast from 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. The lunch menu is served daily at 11 a.m. and includes a Philly cheese steak with onions, bell peppers and Swiss on a hoagie for $6.95 and Tippy’s jumbo pow wow burger with a half-pound pound of ground beef topped with Swiss and cheddar, Tippy sauce, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon, egg and ham for $7.95. Dinner is served at 4 p.m. and features a very tender rib eye steak selection from $10.95 for the 10 oz. steak to $16.95 for the 16 oz. rib eye. Seafood is also offered, ranging from mouth-watering deep fried fantail shrimp to halibut beer battered fish and chips. Sunday at 4 p.m. the prime rib $8 house specialty is offered until it is gone.

The Tippy Canoe has a new very special outdoor patio beer garden area that includes a fire pit and bar. It can seat 150 people and has a stage for live music. What a great place to visit on those hot summer nights to stay cool and hear some great live music right on the banks of the Sandy River. Non-smokers appreciate the outdoor atmosphere.

This writer was lucky enough to visit The Tippy Canoe recently when Cee Cee James was rocking down the house. James is a delightful recent import from San Diego. She is a funky white girl blend of Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, and can really belt out a song, forcing you onto the dance floor in a joyous musical celebration. Her rendition of Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz and Piece Of My Heart; for you Janis Joplin lovers, is an absolute must. This writer loves Janis Joplin’s music and James really brings it home. James was born in Portland, left when she was five years old and has won musical acclaim and honors, prior to her recent tragic loss of her husband and return to her roots here in Portland.

The band got together in March here in Portland and has pumped out raw roadhouse rocking blues ever since. John DiMartino, of Vancouver, is on the drums; Larry Dupio, from Hawaii, plays guitar; Rob Lansing, of San Francisco, is on bass. The band may add a sax player in the future.

If you want a place to go on a hot summer Portland night for good food, first-class live rock & roll and blues entertainment and a comfortable indoor and outdoor environment with no cover charge, this writer highly recommends The Tippy Canoe, on the cool refreshing banks of the Sandy River.
