Dave Fleschner Trio at Five Spice
by Joy Sen
The beautiful evening of July 2 at FiveSpice Restaurant in Lake Oswego
was enhanced by the sweet sounds of the Dave Fleschner jazz trio.
FiveSpice, located at the Lake View Villa in Lake Oswego on 1st Street,
is a fine restaurant with a large array of Pan-American cuisine. They
serve everything from their popular appetizers called street hawkers
fare, to entrees including herb-filled Vietnamese salad rolls with
spicy peanut sauce and spice-filled Indian samosa. There is a large
tea menu, with exotic choices by the pot, desserts like molten chocolate
cake with sweet Vietnamese coffee sauce and a to-go menu.
To enter, you go upstairs into the exotic space, after finding a convenient
parking garage. The décor is upscale Asian with hardwood floors,
bamboo and grass cloth walls. With a centrally located bar, the room
is cozy and discreet. A lovely patio overlooking the lake is a favorite
spot for sipping champagne cocktails and dining.
FiveSpice also offers some of the best jazz trios in the Portland
area. A jazz trio is perfect for this room, it is intimate and
comfortable
with a flair of elegance. The music on Thursday, 8-11, Friday and
Saturday nights from 9-midnight, adds to the ambiance of sophistication.
Dave Fleschner is probably best known for his B3 organ playing, but
he is also a very fine pianist and his trio presents jazz standards
at their best. Fleschner is a well-respected and very busy musician.
He has made a mark on the world of jazz fusion with his sextet
and has garnered much attention in Portland for his efforts. Just
Google
him and see.
The jazz trio consists of Fleschner on piano, Ken Ollis on drums
and Tom Wakeling on bass. To find out more about Fleschner, go
to his very
cool web site www.davefleschner.com and hear his music. Fleschner
returns to FiveSpice soon with his trio. Other trios appearing
include Tall
Jazz, Stu Cook, Bill Beach and Clay Giberson.
