Maguffy's

Suits & jeans mingle at pub

by Rae Gordon

In the land where the microchips sway, a surprisingly relaxing pub sits smack dab in the middle of it all. Maguffy's Pub calls the corner of Murray and S.W. TV Highway home. Inside, suits and jeans mingle and laugh over a good game of pool. It is warm and welcoming in its entire green-tinted sports bar splendor.

When you walk into Maguffy's, the first thing to catch your eye is a fireplace in the middle of the room with seating around the busy flames. You can cozy up to it or pick one of the many seating choices at the bar or around the room. It has a big open floor plan with plenty of room to breathe. The counter is wheelchair accessible for those who are lower to the ground but still want to belly up to the bar. Maguffy's Pub is open every day at 7 a.m.

Along with service with a smile, Maguffy's now offers the end all, be all of late night adventure and craziness: Karaoke on Mondays starting at 9 p.m. Where else can you be Madonna AND Prince all in the same night?

The many pool tables make this a meeting place unto itself as competitive players converge to do battle over green chalky felt. The pool league competes, bar against bar.

The Karaoke songbook gives you choices that are plenty, including just the right mixture of country, rock, pop and alternative. You can even look them up by artist or by song. There are enough screens to read, so if you're shy, you can show the crowd your best side, whichever one that is.

There is a live DJ every Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. with some trivia. The sound system is perfectly set; not too loud and not too soft. Chuck Rogers is the "Karaoke guy," literally. He says that he would show up to a party and people would exclaim, "Hey, the Karaoke guy is here," so it was a given that the name would stick. He owns and maintains all the equipment and does private parties as well. Rogers has run Karaoke professionally for almost three years and seems to enjoy the camaraderie. He plumps up the songbook by adding over 100 songs titles every month to keep it fresh. He currently has 4,000 represented here and growing. He even has a few songs by those Hanson Brothers.

As for the good food here, appetizers include homemade chips, as well as onion rings. A delightful encounter could be the mucho nachos saturated in chili with a bounty of co-conspirators like cheddar cheese, sour cream and guacamole, among other delectable criminals. Maguffy's specialty is "Irish style" fish and chips cooked in their special batter. They also serve gourmet burgers, including the popular gardenburger and Dublin Deluxe. There's even a foot long hot dog. A great deal to remember is Taco Tuesday, two for $1. Menu prices are reasonable and you are bound to find something here in which you would want to sink your teeth.

Poker machines are behind their own little swinging door. Don't forget to say hi to the little guys near the door as you walk by. No, these aren't short bouncers. Look and you'll see some curious fish looking out at you from an enormous tank.

There is a nice mix of people here. Throw in a few professional men huddled around the golf arcade game, sprinkle it with some blue collar men whooping it up over their successful pool match, then finish it off with women watching both the above mentioned and you have a nice stew of a pub. Maguffy's is a place you wouldn't mind coming into again...and again.
