ESSENTIALS
By M. Sebenoler
The plethora of musical talent in the Portland Metro Area is astonishing
and only a select few get the press and media coverage that so many
deserve. There are many unsung (sic) heroes out there who have been
gigging away the years out of the spotlight but not out of the hearts
of the audiences for whom they perform. A prime example is the eight-piece
variety band, The Essentials, recently performing at the M&M Lounge
in Gresham.
Founded back in 1989 by bassist Bob Thompson, the group has “quietly”
performed many low profile gigs and parties, all thoughts of grandeur
and fame just a fleeting afterthought. The reality is having fun performing
and making a few bucks doing what you love most. Obviously, over the
years, there have been several personnel changes, but along the way
a vast repertoire of music has accumulated, as well as a very tight
unit and show.
The Essentials feature lovely local Portlander Linda Thompson, who
covers many of the top divas like Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, Tina
Turner and Shania Twain. Like many star front-ladies, Thompson’s
energetic stage persona connects well with an audience. Like the rest
of the band, she covers many territories in her musical renditions and
is very engaging.
Members of The Essentials have backgrounds in many well-known local
groups going back to the ‘70s such as Wheatfield, The Moondogs,
The Odds and The Burnside Bombers. Guitar whiz Matt Killeen also sings,
as well as bassist Bob Thompson. Keyboardist Mr. Buddy Love (Pat Dull)
also contributes vocally; and drummer Rick Starr (no relation to Ringo)
holds down the big beat.
And, of course, there is the horn section. The Scappoose Horns, led
by Jim Turner on trumpet, also includes Big Bob Anderson on saxes and
Brad Elliott on trumpet and trombone. A veteran horn section like this
adds so much dimension to the music and gives a big band sound to many
styles The Essentials cover. The Scappoose Horns are not only musically
talented but, along with the spirit of the band, are wonderful showmen.
They have been known to leave the stage collectively, join the crowd
on the dance floor for a “high-spirited New Orleans style reverie.”
The Essentials make no pretense or excuses for covering so many classic
songs and artists. From Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Cold Blood, Jr.
Walker and The All Stars, Van Morrison and The Temptations to The Crusaders,
Wilson Pickett, Little Feat, The Go-Gos, Kool and the Gang, the Beatles
and Rolling Stones and so on and so on, the songlist is extensive and
explosive. There is something there for everyone and the group’s
love of the music they perform is contagious. The tight arrangements
and versatility of the group is pure show and entertainment.
Don’t miss these guys (and gal), they are worth the price of
admission and will hold your attention all night. Don’t forget
your dancin’ shoes!
