SEATTLE Spotlight
THE BATH
HOUSE THEATRE
By Patrice
Raplee
The city of Seattle is truly a paragon of the arts. Museums, concert
halls, performing arts centers and theatres are abundantly located in
every district in and around the Emerald City.
The plethora of options makes it a difficult choice when deciding on
which of these cultural events to attend, especially if you are visiting
from out of town. An excellent recommendation from savvy theatre patrons
and local actors is the small, but quaint Bathhouse Theatre. Located
on the N.W. bank of Seattle's Green Lake, this historically charming
theatre has been renovated and placed into the capable hands of the
Seattle Public Theatre Organization.
The Bathhouse affords the audience an opportunity to enjoy a close-up
personal view of a performance with the ambience expected of a good
theatre playhouse. Situated on park grounds, between evergreen and old
oak trees, the Bathhouse beckons with its enchanting timeless architecture
and hints of Grecian appliqué. Another appealing feature, (especially
in Seattle) is the ample parking located just a short stroll down the
park path from the theatre.
The first production to debut at the renovated Bathhouse Theatre was
Joshua Sobol's powerful holocaust drama Ghetto, followed by Aime
Cesaire's The Tragedy Of King Christophe. Both plays heralded
rave reviews and garnered increasing support for the non-profit SPT
organization from corporate companies and local patrons. If superb performances
such as The Tragedy Of King Christophe are any indication of
the quality and caliber of productions to appear at the Bathhouse Theatre,
then the success of this venue is secure.
SPT's Masterworks of World Theatre Series for the spring season include:
Incorruptible by Michael Hollinger, directed by B.J. Douglas, March
- April 15; and Bandito by Luis Valdez, directed by Olga Sanchez,
May - June 10, (both Seattle premiers). For tickets and further information
