Billionaire Bachelors
@ Mr. B’s

by Dorothy Timpy

A pre-Thanksgiving party at Mr. B’s featured the Billionaire Bachelors with rock and roll memorabilia and current tunes performed in their inimitable style of well- rehearsed sounds.
Taking up positions and vocal parts of the four-piece group are: J.J. Janeway, bassist; Pete Peterson on keyboards, John Lamoreau, guitarist and Charlie Swift on the drums to help Janeway round out the percussionist base.

Audience members sat and listened as the accomplished musicians poured out rock and roll tunes from a recently passed era. All four take their parts vocally and some of the tunes are anywhere from two-part to four-part harmonies, well done. Drummer Swift picked up “front man” duties from behind the drums and chatted with the audience and announced tunes aptly as they went along.

The band appears to be intently sincere about their performances and the quality of the music. Kickoff song was Sharp Dressed Man with the musicians swinging into I Like It and Runnin’ and Hidin’, with the guitar and keyboards trading off leads on the various renditions. They offer individualistic creativity in arrangements for the instruments.

Mr. B’s has undergone a major metamorphosis in that space has been clipped by about 50 percent, according to bartenders Mytheena and Tammy. Mytheena recalls the earlier days of Mr. B’s and remembers the crowds of country dancers who gathered there consistently. However, economics brought about a need to make changes. A Subway shop in the backside area, where the lounge once extended, now takes up the eliminated space of the Mr. B’s lounge.

Live music at Mr. B’s is an occasional event now and priority is given to Karaoke Tuesday through Saturday from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. Every fifth Friday finds contestants vying in finals for a $100 prize. Live music also is scheduled for New Year’s Eve featuring Bad Motor Scooter.

According to a recent flyer, contests are slated every Friday evening with cash prizes awarded. The conglomerate just off I-84 at Exit 17 has undergone another change. The restaurant, once known as Mrs. B’s, is now called Buckhorn Family Restaurant. Though the providing vendor has changed, Mytheena says the truck stop food is the same. Portions are generous and give that home-cooked taste. They provide a full menu ranging from burgers, sandwiches, appetizers, steaks and ribs, homestyle dinners, seafoods, salads and soups as well as a full range of breakfast items and a special section for the “little bucks”.

For the younguns the menu offers breakfast of cereal, toast, eggs, bacon, silver dollar pancakes and French toast. Lunch and dinner dishes include meatloaf and mashed potatoes, peanut butter and jelly with fries, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hamburgers, fried fish, chicken tenders, grilled cheese and spaghetti and meatballs, all with the option of French fries.

Mr. B’s has added a pool table, Golden Tee golf game, seven new televisions, special Thursday Ladies night with prizes and Sunday night football.
