Margaret Slovak

Guitarist/Composer/Painter Margaret Slovak will present two concerts at The Old Church, located at 1422 S.W. 11th Avenue in downtown Portland, on June 18-19, beginning at 8:30 p.m.

These two concerts will celebrate the release of her independently released solo guitar CD, Undying Hope. The CD features 12 of Slovak's original solo guitar compositions, which combine jazz, classical and ethnic musical elements. Eleven pieces are performed on nylon string guitar and three on electric guitar. The CD also contains her arrangements of a Miles Davis composition, Blue In Green and a bossa nova penned by Luis Bonfa, Manha de Carnaval.

In addition, Slovak's paintings corresponds to one of her musical compositions. At the Old Church admission price for the concert is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. These concerts are made possible by a grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

For more information, contact The Old Church at 222-2031. In addition, Slovak has one composition on a new compilation CD released in early May by Twenty-One Cent Media, a local Portland label. Her contribution to that collection is a piece she composed entitled Flowers for Marie and features Slovak on guitar, Fred Hersch on piano, Michael Formanek on bass and Michael Sarin on drums. This selection was recorded in 1989, when she was still living in N.Y.C. The compilation CD is called Proximity and contains songs by 11 other Portland artists, including Bobby Torres, Nancy King, Steve Chris-tofferson, Rebecca Kilgore, Dave Frishberg and Tom Grant.
