McGillacuddy's
By Jeff Gage
One recent weekend, this writer found himself, accompanied by fiancée Shelley, driving out N.E. Halsey looking for something to do. Eyeing a well-lit sign saying McGillacuddy's, this writer took a chance and was pleasantly rewarded. A sports fan yes, a sports freak no, this establishment catered to middle-of-the-road sports bar tastes.
The decor of McGillacuddy's is awash in all types of sports memoabilia from speedboat racing to baseball. There is enough decorum all over to keep eyes wandering from one spot to another recalling nostalgic events that spur sport-based conversation. Sitting under a picture of Dodger great Sandy Koufax brought about memories of being the next great Dodger pitcher. With all the photo's of sports icons past and present, plus banners of all types posted around the ceiling, you could literally hear conversations revolving around who was the greatest football or baseball players, or for that matter speedboat races.
Another focal point of McGilla-cuddy's are the two large screen TVs which legitimize the establishment as a bona fide sports bar. No soap operas of Melrose Place-like shows are on here, carriage racing will be on before any non-sports related video will be shown.
For those who want to do more than sit and watch or talk, there are other activities at McGillacuddy's to keep you entertained. Foosball is alive and well with varying levels of playing abilities evident. So there's no reason to feel intimidated by those playing who can make 100 m.p.h. slapshots. Two pool tables in a large space beckon those wanting to play a slower paced game. Video games round out the fun for the more active set. Wherever you play or sit, there is always a TV within eye-shot, so missing the big plays won't be an option.
An added bonus on weekends is live music. McGillacuddy's about the only sports bar this writer has attended that offers listening to rock and watching racquetball in the same venue.
The food at McGillacuddy's is good and is served from opening until closing. Daily lunch and dinner specials are carefully thought out in advance and placed on calendars at every table. This gives patrons a good idea of when to come for favorite meals of for trying something different. The everyday menu is just as appetizing, with choices ranging from chicken strips, burgers, sandwiches, salads and seafood. All are priced inexpensively and served fresh, not pre-made. Mondays feature "Monday Night Nitro" with pizza at only $1 per slice and lots of sports served with it.
If you're looking for a place to go with inexpensive but good food, sports conversation, or just a fun place to unwind, McGillacuddy's would be a good choice. You won't be disappointed.
