Wanker's Corner Saloon-Cafe's new address is 8499 Main St., Wilsonville and the surrounding road construction seems to have little effect on the clientele in the beautiful new building.
Owner J. Maixner dug around in his warehouse of memorabilia to create a hefty display in the new enlarged quarters. Since the new Wanker's is exactly double the size of the old one on Stafford Road, there is plenty of room for displays of all kinds.
Each section of the café touts a special theme. One corner is for swimming and surfboarding; a wide variety of antiques is displayed, as well as photographs of a vintage nature from eras gone by. Anyone who may exceed the baby boomer era will be delighted with the memories tickled by post-ers of Roy Rogers and Trigger, Gene Autry, John Wayne. There are photographs of movie stars galore with one entire wall devoted to Maixner's collection.
Since the name of the saloon is derived from Australian phraseology, many items on display dig into the Australian past. If you've enjoyed the artifacts at the old location you will certainly be delighted with the enhanced collection in the larger spot. Some of the Australian items decking the walls include what appears to be aborigine warrior gear, shields, masks, etc. The Saloon is a real family oriented spot as the night this writer visited, diners ranged in age from just over toddlers to seniors.
There is an air of familiarity as the booths, etc. from the Stafford Road location have been installed, along with the atmosphere created by peanut shells on the floor and a bowl of peanuts on every table. More than 25,000 pounds of peanuts are consumed annually at the café and they're free on weekdays from 4-6 p.m. The most recent or Fifth Edition of the Wanker's Corner Saloon-Café publication, available to the public as you go in the door, tells a bit about the establishment's beginning shortly after the repeal of prohibition in 1933 when it shared space with a grocery store. Since its inception, there has been a steady stream of collections of antiques, junk, Americana, Australiana, movie posters and many unidentifiable objects, making a move to larger quarters inevitable.
Wanker's boasts feeding the hungry in two ways: Serving large portions of good food at a reasonable price and reaching a total of $70,000 for the Oregon Food Bank by donating a portion of a cover charge on dance nights.
The family oriented restaurant offers the special Kids-Kids-Kids --- menu for those 10 years and under, consisting of peanut butter and jelly "sammiches," grilled cheese, chicken fingers and hamburgers, all with french fries.
The move has allowed an increase in variety of micro brews among other things and the menu is certainly admirable. One unusual menu item is "Toad In A Hole." The Pommies call it Bangers and Mash and it really is a mountain of mashed spuds, peas and the Aussies and Pommmies favorite sausage. This item is only served after 3 p.m.
