If the date you've been pursuing still doesn't want you the way that you want to be wanted after a night of fine dining and a movie, take him or her to see Good Thang at Kelly's Olympian on Friday the 27th of this month. This vintage blues band plays some of the sexiest '50s vintage blues in town.
The group was started in 1996 by harmonica player/singer, Lynnann Hyde, along with guitarist, band partner Stu Kinzel. This is a very fine match up alone, but when combined as they were at Kelly's Olympian on the evening of Jan. 9, with percussionist Rob Lewis and stand-in local bass player icon Scott White, the performance and atmosphere was simply magic. There wasn't an unhappy face in the crowd and for good reason. The service was great and so was the music.
This vintage blues band plays just that and if you've never heard Good Thang blues before, you're in for a real treat. This is very sexy music; it'll make your juices flow and your heart pound. It reaches in and grabs a part of your soul. You may find yourself wanting to connect to the object of your affection in a much more intimate way. Good blues performed well can have this effect on people, and there wasn't a man or woman at Kelly's Olympian who was not somehow affected by this stirring energy. Could this phenomenon happen again? When the bets are all in, this writer's best guess would have to be a solid "Yes!"
What sets this particular blues band apart from so many other performers is many things. For starters you can take a look at the unpretentious and yet awesome harmonica played by Lynnann Hyde. Guitar player vocalist Stu Kinzel belts out the blues of the '50s so well, you'd think he in-vented them; he also happens to play a very sweet guitar as well. Stand-in bass player/vocalist Scott White, who plays a very big and naughty bass, has a satisfying style all his own. Well-crafted vocals make for a lot to like about his package. Percussionist Rob Lewis pulls is all together and it works very well, to say the least, creating a long forgotten old time Juke Joint environment of days long past.
Check out Good Thang. Hunt them down if you have to. Good Thang will play again on Feb. 27 at Kelly's Olympian, possibly Portland's oldest bar and restaurant, established in 1905 and located at S.W. 4th and Washington. Featuring live performances every Thursday night by the Lucky Devils, Kelly's hosts a string of other talented local blues bands on Friday and Saturday nights.
