Bodacious Classics
Club
promotes calendar girl contest
by Patrice Raplee
The thought of a teal-colored 1957 Chevy conjurs up an image of a pretty
classic car in most peoples' imagination, as well as a classic era.
"That image" will remain ingrained in this photojournalist's
mind as the first time Ralph McKee, owner of Bodacious Classics on 24th
and S.E. Powell, came driving down Broadway Avenue in Portland with
the sun glinting off his Chevy's pristine chrome bumpers. McKee had
worked with KISN radio on a summer concert promotion to bring Mark Lindsey
of Paul Revere and the Raiders fame to Pioneer Square from the airport
via his vintage beauty to greet fans and sign autographs.
McKee, together with his wife Angie have been involved with many such
promotions, not to mention the constant upgrading of their famous restaurant
and club Bodacious Classics. The McKees purchased BCs two and-a-half
years ago; the idea was to stay with a similar '50s and '60s theme,
but also to expand on the definition of what has become a classic since
that era.
The redefining of nostalgia has been a successful endeavor for the
McKees. So has the innovative brainstorming of Ralph with the new "Millennium
Calendar Girl Contest" that is sponsored every Tuesday night at
9 p.m. Every month a new theme will be set up in the club; February
is Heartbreaker month, March is Irish Spring. All contestants who enter
will have their photographs taken and receive prizes. From the weekly
winners being judged, a finalist for that week will be chosen and on
the last Tuesday of every month the four finalists will compete to have
their photograph printed for the coveted Calendar Girl of that particular
month.
Next December the completed calendar will be available for purchase
at the club and at various retailers around Oregon. Generally speaking,
contests involving photographs and judges can be somewhat tense; not
so with the Calendar Girl contest. The main emphasis is on having fun
and getting really creative with your costumes. The judging is based
on imagination, original costume, personality and presence. Audience
participation makes this event a blast! Positive encouragement for the
contestants definitely helps when strolling up to the camera decked
out in their costumes for a shot at being a calendar girl. With the
advent of the sponsors, the prizes are nothing to sneeze at. Parklane
Jewelry gives out a tennis bracelet for the weekly prize and a $50 gift
certificate for the monthly winner with a second and third place prize
given at the same time. Quick Stop photo, Music Millennium, Positively
Entertainment and a bevy of other sponsors have contributed prizes and
their services to support this growing event. If you would like to know
more about the weekly contest, call Bodacious Classics for more information.
BCs has excellent food as well as other entertainment and events. Resident
DJ Bob Harrop plays classic hits for you to dance away the night, or
catch Wednesday evenings for the West Coast swing dance session with
free lessons. Dart leagues have made BCs their regular home; Sunday
through Thursday evenings 10 or more dart teams frequent the club surrounded
by trophies lining the wall from past competitions.
The menu for the restaurant changes regularly, the McKees never cut
costs and are committed to high quality food at a sensible price. Caribbean
chicken salad, steaks, pork, seafood and homemade soups make up a rather
versatile menu, with gourmet burgers available for a quick bite. When
asked what the drink specialty of the house tends to be, McKee states
that "all the drinks are special with your favorite drink being
made right!"
Bodacious Classics has acquired a warmer look to the interior with
a bigger dance floor and music catalogue. The McKees are working on
expanding the club and keeping BCs as the top classics establishment
in Portland. For more information, call 232-0852 or check out ad this
